When trying to decide on a quilt pattern, I was overwhelmed with the number of possibilities for quilt patches. Then Cindy Glessner, a member of the Barn Quilt Committee, suggested I should consider doing something about the fall since we were involved with stating the Fulton Fall Folk Festival. What a great idea!! Thanks to Cindy it was easy to design the special quilt patch, “Raking up Fall Festival Memories”. The Fulton Fall Folk Festival came about with a dream of Helen Overly, along with business partner Freda Raker, to introduce this area; its beauty, culture and wonderful people to visitors, via tourism. The idea was to use an event to build tourism as an industry, bringing tourism revenue to the County. Committees with hardworking people caught the vision and made it happen.

Plans were to have activities going on throughout the County, from the southern tip to the north end and all parts in between. It was to be something that would generate money for everyone participating. We had, beginning in Southern Fulton an art and craft show, moving on north, an apple butter boil, food at the fire halls, a muzzle loader meet, house tours, a parade in McConnellsburg with the folks in it and others at each location dressed in period clothing. There was country music, demonstrations of old time farm equipment, finally ending at the northern point, the grist mill where the owners gave mill tours, served buckwheat cakes and hosted a talent show. The Festival still exists and is the biggest thing that happens in the County each year. It has changed, taken on a life of its own from the original ideas, but still brings in hundreds of people each year. Held the third weekend every October. Don’t miss it!
